National Teach Spanish Week is September 26-October 3rd, 2021 and was created to bring attention to the national teacher shortage in the U.S. The week runs concurrently with Hispanic American Heritage Month.

The American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese, or AATSP, launched the inaugural National Teach Spanish Day on September 30, 2019. For 2021, the day was extended to a week to meet popular demand.

Did you know the U.S. has the fifth most native Spanish speakers worldwide?* The amount of native Spanish speakers continues to grow throughout the U.S., and a need remains to train new teachers to address the K-12 Spanish teacher shortage.

National Teach Spanish Week was developed to meet the following goals:

  1. To promote the teaching of Spanish as a profession
  2. To call attention to the current Spanish teacher shortage in the U.S.
  3. To emphasize the importance of Spanish as a world language

For 2021’s National Teach Spanish Week, we at Vista Higher Learning asked Spanish instructors: How has your career as a language instructor changed your life for the better? What do you love about being a Spanish teacher?

We were hoping that instructor’s responses would encourage students to consider a career as a Spanish instructor. View this brief video to see what teachers had to say!

National Teach Spanish Week | What did students have to say about their Spanish teachers?

Last year we asked students to describe a Spanish instructor who changed their feelings about speaking Spanish. We received an extraordinary number of submissions from across the country and had a great time reading them all.  See what students said in 2020!

#NTSW2021 is hosted by AATSP. Learn more about activities hosted by this wonderful organization.
