As we come to the end of 2024, it feels like the perfect moment to pause and reflect on the remarkable journey of integrating AI into language teaching. Over the past two years, I have witnessed an impactful transformation—from initial skepticism and fear to a widespread embrace of AI as an ally in education. This evolution has not only shaped my own teaching practices but has also sparked meaningful conversations and innovations across the field of language education. Here is a look back at how it all unfolded.
Fall 2022: Quiet Beginnings
When ChatGPT arrived on the scene in November 2022, I was immediately captivated by its potential to support teaching and learning. As a parent of children with ADHD and autism, AI quickly became an indispensable tool in our daily lives. From breaking down challenging concepts to supporting personalized learning strategies for my kids, AI was unlocking exciting new possibilities. Yet, in my professional life, I approached it cautiously. The stigma surrounding AI in academia was palpable, and I used it quietly, not sharing with colleagues. It felt like stepping into uncharted territory.
Spring 2023: The First Step into the Spotlight
By spring, I had explored countless ways to use AI to enhance language learning and teaching. I was eager to share my discoveries at my first AI-focused conference presentation. As I prepared, excitement gave way to nerves. Admitting I used AI in my work felt risky. At the time, many viewed AI with suspicion, fearing it threatened academic integrity or jobs. Many labeled it a “cheating machine” for students or worried it would “take our jobs.” Despite my apprehension, the presentation sparked curiosity and dialogue. I realized how essential it was to lead these conversations, even amidst skepticism.
Fall 2023: Breaking Ground in Language Education
Fast forward to fall, and AI had started gaining momentum. I presented at multiple conferences and conducted workshops for faculty at my institution and beyond. While fear of job displacement lingered, interest in AI’s potential grew. I emphasized how AI elevated our teaching, enabling efficiency, creativity, and personalized learning experiences. Conference sessions on AI were packed, signaling a shift in interest. Still, only a few language professors were actively using it, leaving significant opportunities for growth.
Spring 2024: A Surge of Curiosity
By spring, interest had exploded. Faculty reached out, eager for workshops on integrating AI into their teaching practices. The focus shifted from fear to curiosity. I saw educators embracing AI as a tool to streamline their work and support student success. I also began facilitating an AI Learning Community, sponsored by Vista Higher Learning, bringing together language educators to explore how AI could support teaching and learning. Discussions began to center on how AI could foster deeper engagement in language learning.
Fall 2024: The Wave of Adoption
This semester marked a turning point. A wave of faculty has embraced AI, not just to boost efficiency but to enrich their teaching. The AI Learning Community became a vibrant hub of conversations about AI’s impact on language education. The engagement from this group of language faculty was inspiring, and we had great discussions on how AI could support teaching and learning. Conference sessions on AI were ubiquitous, filled with educators sharing insights and strategies. The language teaching field transformed, with AI becoming more of a collaborative ally than a looming threat.
Looking back, the journey from fear to acceptance has been remarkable. AI has not replaced us; if anything it has elevated our role as educators. It has empowered us to focus on what we do best—connecting with our students and fostering meaningful learning experiences. Looking ahead, I’m optimistic about the possibilities. As experts in language education, we have the opportunity—and responsibility—to shape how AI supports teaching and learning in ways that prioritize human connection and intercultural understanding. The path forward will require collaboration, creativity, and shared vision. Together, we can ensure that AI enhances, rather than diminishes, the uniquely human aspects of language learning. Let’s come together, as a community of educators, to lead this transformation and build a future where AI empowers both teachers and students to thrive.
