Get to Know Bernardo de Gálvez — A Clever, History-filled Story that Everyone Will Enjoy

By- Erika Semprun

Get to Know Bernardo de Gálvez tells the story of Teresa Valcarce, known in the book as Mary Activist, a young woman on a quest in the United States Capitol. The short story narrates Mary’s desire to achieve justice for Bernardo de Gálveza Spanish general who played a key role in the American Revolution, but who had been forgotten for hundreds of years — by hanging his portrait in the Capitol. Despite Gálvez’s brilliant efforts throughout the war, Congress failed to recognize and honor his accomplishments. For over 230 years, a promise to hang Gálvez’s portrait went unfulfilled. Finally, in 2014, President Barack Obama honored that promise and had the general’s portrait hung in the Capitol.

Get to Know Bernardo de Gálvez is a magnificent read for people of all ages. Children, adolescents, and adults are guaranteed to find this story both enjoyable and extremely educational! The author, Guillermo Fesser, does an excellent job of captivating the audience. His diction is concise yet witty, which makes for a heartwarming and refreshing read. The narration is informative and the dialogue serves to provide readers with a lively experience.
