Most people associate May with holidays such as Mother’s Day, Cinco de Mayo, and Memorial Day. But May is also designated as Teacher Appreciation Month. Even though we hope and expect children to appreciate their teachers (and mothers) all year round, having a month dedicated to recognizing the hard work and passion teachers put forth each day is important. It makes teachers feel as though the students really are respectful and appreciative of everything teachers do for them on a daily basis.

The national Parent Teacher Association (PTA) has a page devoted to ideas to show your appreciation for teachers. Many families and students may wish to donate tangible gifts to teachers. Pinterest also offers very clever suggestions.

Some ideas include:

  • gift cards
  • favorite candy or beverage
  • pampering items, such as lotions or body wash
  • massage or beauty certificates
  • movie tickets
  • flowers
  • supplies for the classroom

Other ideas that don’t cost much money are:

  • create a drawing
  • make a craft project
  • create a handmade thank you card
  • make a handmade picture frame with a photo of the student and teacher
  • shout outs on social media sites
  • a favorite quote that describes the teacher typed and placed in a frame

Whatever students decide to do, the best gift a teacher could possibly get is a demonstration of respect and admiration. This can simply be done by behaving extra well, following the class rules, and performing to the best of their ability on every assignment. Nothing makes a teacher feel better and more proud than to see his or her students succeed.
