7 Quotes to Celebrate Life and Friendship

By-Angela Padrón

When you hear the word “friendship,” what other words come to mind? Companionship is one word that could be used interchangeably with “friendship.” Words like harmony, amicability, concord—and of course love—take friendship to another level, however, by describing even further the bond of caring, kindness, and empathy that exists between close friends.

Throughout the years, many people have written or spoken about the meaning of friendship, and about the trials and tribulations that can come with friendships. Here are a few quotes that cover a broad spectrum of thoughts regarding friends:

  • Love is the only force capable of transforming an enemy into a friend.” – Martin Luther King, Jr. King was known for promoting peace as a way to end discrimination and segregation. This quote explains that using non-violent means and showing love towards others, even when they don’t show it to you, can change views and beliefs.

  • “Walking with a friend in the dark is better than walking alone in the light.” – Helen Keller. Keller’s quote tells us that friendship is, quite simply, one of the most important things in the world. Even a rich life lived in the “light” pales in comparison to a life with a friend in it.

  • “My best friend is the one who brings out the best in me.” – Henry Ford. Friends support and encourage one another to be the best they can be.

  • “The only way to have a friend is to be one.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson. This quote refers back to the “Golden Rule,” which notes that we should treat others the way we want to be treated.

  • “It is more shameful to distrust our friends than to be deceived by them.” – Confucius. It is better to trust your friends—even at the risk of being taken advantage of—than to be suspicious and distrustful.

  • “Lots of people want to ride with you in the limo, but what you want is someone who will take the bus with you when the limo breaks down.” – Oprah Winfrey. Anyone can say they are your friend, but those who are there in times of trouble when you need them will prove to be your true friends.

  • “Friendship is unnecessary, like philosophy, like art …. It has no survival value; rather it is one of those things that give value to survival.” – C. S. Lewis. While people can get by without friends, life would be lonely and empty without them. Building friendships makes life more meaningful and enjoyable.

When it comes to words or quotes about friendship, some of the most famous ones are found in songs such as “Thank You for Being a Friend” by Andrew Gold and “You’ve Got a Friend” by James Taylor. No matter whether you sing, speak, or write about friendship, one thing is clear —friendship is a topic dear to many hearts and minds.
