A Letter from the Author
It is an honor to announce that Vista Higher Learning will publish an eighth edition of the Spanish literature textbook Aproximaciones al estudio de la literatura hispánica, previously published by McGraw-Hill. I am co-author of the book with Teresa Valdivieso and Carmelo Virgillo. The book is designed to teach students basic skills in literary analysis through readings in Spanish and Spanish-American literature and a variety of exercises. The presentation is divided by genre: narrative (short story and the novel), poetry, drama (one-act plays and a full-length play), and essays. There are historical introductions, commentaries on analysis for each genre, and exercises.

Each literary selection includes an introduction to the author, glosses, notes, and exercises. The book is set up in such a way that the individual instructors can develop their own ways of choosing and presenting the materials. There are several appendices, including a glossary of literary terms. An idea behind Aproximaciones is that the key to all approaches to literary study and criticism is the close reading of texts.

Bearing that in mind, the authors of the book endeavor to provide access to the tools of analysis as a lead-in to further and more advanced study of literature and culture. It is a privilege to have the support and endorsement of Vista Higher Learning, which will introduce the book to a new generation of students.
